Formal and informal Latin script for Kazakh language

In 2017 President Nursultan Nazarbayev announced that Kazakhstan will fully transition from Cyrillic to Latin letters by 2025. I wrote this post in response. As my good friend Maktaxali taught me, we often find that “The caravan has left but the dogs are still barking”. In the matter of writing the Kazakh language using the Latin script, I found myself adding to the “howls”.

The Formal and Informal Latin scripts

I know that the “caravan has left” however, I propose an improved Kazakh Latin Script in two variants Formal (Kara) and Informal (Kiswi). The proposed Formal (Kara) Latin script is suitable for newspapers, the web, and books. While dropping the ‘ altogether, gives the Informal (Kiswi) Latin script which is suitable for SMS, apps, and mobile devices.

Here is an example: The Qazaq national verse “Kozimning qarasi” by Abay Kuwnanbaev using the approved Qazaqstan Latin and Cyrillic scripts; and the proposed Formal (Kara) and Informal (Kiswi) Latin scripts.

Below there is a Qazaq Cyrillic to Kara and Kiswi alippe translation table, but first, here is an explanation of the proposed scripts.

Background

After living in Kazakhstan for nearly 20 years, and as a Kazakh language speaker, my interest in this topic goes back a long way.  In 1990, I prepared a guide to the Kazakh language for English speakers called “Kazakh Notes“. This guide helps language learners master the consonant and vowel harmonies underlying the spoken and written forms of Kazakh language words. Learning, speaking and promoting  Kazakh language learning is an abiding interest of mine.

Goals

  • Build on same philosophy as the official Qazaqstan Latin script.
  • Improve the visual aesthetic by reducing reliance on ‘.
  • Make the written form more closely reflect vowel harmony.
  • Reduce the number of digraphs required.
  • Provide a simplified form of the script for use in apps and mobile devices where the  ‘ character is not permitted, or desirable.

Proposed Latin alphabet with Formal and Informal variants

The above changes have reduced the required apostrophes from 10 to 4 (!) , and in the Informal Latin script none are required!

Juwan and Jingiswke sounds

The proposed latin script treats Juwan (Hard) and Jingiswke (Soft) variants of sounds in a uniform way. For consonants, K and G the Juwan variants have their own letters Q and X and the distinction is preserved in the Kiswi alippe.  For vowels the Jingishke variants are marked with the ‘ and the distinction is not preserved in the Kiswi alippe

Kazakh Notes now free download on Google Play

Back in 1991 in my first year in Kazakhstan, I wrote an introduction to Kazakh Language for English speakers called “Kazakh Notes”.  I have just uploaded it and made it free on Google Play: Kazakh Notes.

While preparing the manuscript for upload – I found that the University of Washington has a copy of “Kazakh Notes” – that was quite nice to know!

Enjoy!

Visual metaphors assist busy readers, learners

See this in the news:

Announcing the availability of the first implementation of the Knowledge Ferret open source project.

The knowledgeferret.com adds a compelling visual metaphor to the document reader to help busy readers to make sense of large and complicated documents. The Productivity Commissions recent report into the Not-For-Profit sector in Australia is being used as a test of this technology.

The “Knowledge Ferret” is David’s third exploration of adding visual metaphor to large documents. The first was the Visual PMBOK(r) Guide – jospar.com and the second earlier work was for NSW Health’s Protocols and Procedures for Aged Care Assessment

In the “Knowledge Ferret” the visual metaphor is formed by the index on the left hand side of the document. It shows the topic that is currently in focus and the context of this topic. While the user can’t ever see all the topics in a document at one time, if ever a topic is visible, it is always in the same place in relation to all other topics. This means that as the user interacts and explores the document they are simultaneously building a mental map of the whole document.

While a user is reading a topic, the most similar topics in the rest of the document are highlighted in blue. These blue sections are like a ‘radar’ view into the rest of the document and makes connections between the current topic and other topics, possibly many chapters apart.

The search box returns its results using the same dynamic index using green highlighting. The search function is not designed to be exhaustive, but rather to guide the user to the top seven topics that most closely relate to the search term.

The “Most Read” link just under the search box highlights the most frequently read topics in a dark orange colour.

Using the “Share / Save” link, users may comment on via twitter, facebook and a dozen other social media sites about any topic in the document.

The Lightbox Clones Matrix (On One Page)

Ozh has created a Lightbox Clones Matrix selection tool that exemplifies many of the qualities of the (On One Page) design pattern.

(On One Page)

Announcing (On One Page)
(On One Page) – is an information design pattern aimed at assisting people to master best practice guidelines, policies, procedures and bodies of knowledge.  I have created some examples:

  1. New South Wales Health Department’s, Aged Care Assessment Guidelines (On One Page) .  This is sourced from a 144 page book!
  2. The Project Management Institutes’s, PMBOK Guide – Fourth Edition (On One Page). This is a 350+ page book.

Principles
The (On One Page) design pattern has the following features:

  1. The user is presented with a one-page visual metaphor of all the concepts contained in the book, manual or “body of knowledge”. In the case of a book the index may be an adequate visual metaphor.
  2. The one-page visual metaphor:
    • is interactive
    • gives each concept a fixed position in relation to all other concepts
    • allows focus by only showing a subset of all the concepts at one time
  3. The concept in focus is gold coloured and “see also” concepts are colored light blue.
  4. For concepts with associated text, the text may be displayed in a popup window.

By means of these design decisions, users may

  1. See “both the wood and the trees” simultaneously. The wood is the whole body of knowledge and the trees are individual concepts.
  2. See the interconnections between concepts.
  3. Use spacial as well as verbal memory to master concepts and their interrelationships.

Opera Unite and Tier Agnostic Computing

Opera has just released Opera Unite web server in the browser technology. Here is analysis by Mashable. Opera Unite is an enabling technology for tier agnostic Request Based Distributed Computing (RBDC). Key issues directly addressed by Opera Unite include:

Drivers

  • Build Distributed Applications
  • Provide programmers with a unified programming model (i.e. not deal with a separate programming model on the client)
  • Build Mult-tier applications
  • Use existing technologies
  • Enable applications to ‘run anywhere’
  • Provide a Language agnostic mechanism
  • Use a Client agnostic approach

Conclusion
Reading the Opera Unite announcement has confirmed that the building blocks of RDBC are coming into being.

Converting SAT scores to ATAR

2014-Jul-09 If you wish to learn the current conversion from SAT to ATAR, I recommend calling UAC (http://www.uac.edu.au) by telephone and asking for a copy of the “Common Assessment Schedules for converting SAT and AP scores to their equivalent ATAR”.

2009-Jan-20 Australian students abroad rejoice! All Australian universities have agreed together to follow the recommendations of my report and more fairly convert SAT scores into the Australian UAI!

Did you know that in 2006/7 Australian students who attempt to enter university on the basis of a SAT1 score may be penalised by up to 6 UAI points? I have been following this story for the last 12 months and the lack of SAT1 percentile data for the new SAT1 has clouded the issues. Now, finally, the College Board have published the percentile data for the new SAT1. You can find it here 2006 2007.

Based on this new data from the College Board I have updated my explanation report. The report NSW and ACT school leavers and the conversion of SAT1 to an equivalent UAI (pdf) is a call for change!

Here is the abstract from the report.

Some NSW & ACT high school leavers graduate high school while overseas. These students potentially enrich Australian university communities with their global outlook. Many of these students seek entry to NSW & ACT university courses through the University Admissions Centre (UAC) on the basis of the American College Board’s Scholastic Aptitude Tes1 (SAT1). This report examines the nature o the SAT1 and then compares SAT1 scores with NSW & ACT University Admission Index (UAI) scores. UAC affiliated tertiary institutions assess SAT1 scores on the basis of a œCommon Assessment Schedule that appears to create barriers to university entry for NSW & ACT students who graduate from high school while overseas. These students appear to be penalised by up to 6 UAI points in the process of converting a SAT1 score to a UAI score. After examining the current Assessment Schedule and some of its effects on Australian students, this report recommends an updated Assessment Schedule based on the 2006 SAT1 cohort.

Read the full NSW and ACT school leavers and the conversion of SAT1 to an equivalent UAI report (pdf).

This new report replaces the two earlier reports which you can find here and here.

Internet All The Way Down

“STEPS Toward The Reinvention of Programming”[linkmoved] has a great piece about the promise of a uniform model of computation based on arbitrary decomposition to the internet. On p32 they say:

Part of the solution to œan Internet all the way down has interesting conflicts with today’s hardware and we are curious to see just how far this can be taken without having to posit a different (but pretty minimal) set of machinery to help out. Basically, we would like to make a distributed object system that is (a) so protected that it can allow completely foreign objects to be brought in from elsewhere without causing harm, and (b) so efficient that a much higher level of abstract communication can be used between objects (perhaps an advanced form of œpublish and subscribe or œforward inferencing using knowledge patterns).

One of the central observations underlying RDBC (and Hypertext Computing) is just this idea of the Internet All the Way Down!

Architecting Server/Client Convergence

In this post I argue that the current convergence of Desktop and / Web Apps (RIAs) suggests a convergence of Server and Clients and that this opens up some interesting possibilities.

I have been following an interesting series of posts by Arnon Rotem-Gal-Oz on the web/desktop convergence trend (all four posts are worth reading!). As well, in January and April, Arnon observes software converging towards:

  • the ease of deployment of web applications,
  • the richness and responsiveness of desktop apps,
  • using a unified programming model for the whole app.

Technologies competing for the privilege of delivering some or all of this trifecta include (but are not limited to) AJAX, Adobe Flex, Flash, Adobe Air, Microsoft Silverlight, JavaFX, Google Gears, Mozilla Prism, Aptana’s Jaxer and JNext.

These technologies are being developed in the context of increasing awareness of two trends 1) the possibilities of ‘on-tap’ cloud computing and simultaneously 2) the promise of 100’s of cores in our client computers.

Here are some observations about the current web-app situation:

  • Increasingly, the Virtual Machine environments on the server are being introduced down the tiers and ported to clients. (Silverlight’s CLR, and Java VM come to mind.)
  • The use of Javascript in browsers has taught us about the secure use of mobile code and a similar mechanism could be inductively applied back up the tiers so that servers also are extensible like browsers. (Unlike the movement of server VMs into clients, I am not aware of production or prototype implementations of this.) Aptana’s Jaxer is a great example of this. (Thanks to Peter Svensson for pointing this out.) See Request Based Distributed Computing for a candidate architecture.

What we are seeing is not just a Web/ Desktop Convergence but also the possibility of Server/Client Convergence.

This convergence has the potential to address another problem in the current state of affairs with web apps:

  • Forcing the developer to choose in advance about the location of code execution is like forcing the developer to place a long running bet on the relative performance of the cloud, network and heterogeneous clients.

Actually, this is one of the drivers underlying Microsoft Volta – a technology that is designed to reduce the cost of reassigning portions of an application between server and client. However as Arnon has pointed out it does not provide an abstraction that reinforces the “coarse-grained interface” that works well in the context of the fallacies of distributed computing. Unlike Volta, tier-agnostic requests relies on the same coarse grained interface as AJAX.

Convergence of server and client technologies
However, the convergence of server and client technologies opens up the possibility for Request Based Distributed Computing and tier-agnostic requests to provide a simple mechanism for delaying architectural decisions to run-time as well as supporting:

  • the ease of deployment of web applications,
  • the richness and responsiveness of desktop apps,
  • using a unified programming model for the whole app.

Adaptive control of Request Based Distributed Computing

The purpose of this post is to illustrate the possibility for autonomic computing inherent in Request Based Distributed Computing (RBDC).

This is how I summarised RBDC in a recent post:

Request Based Distributed Computing is a small extension of the http protocol and notion of server, proxy and client. Rich Internet Applications, SOA architected applications and SETI@home type distributed computing alike can utilise a common unified programming model. No longer will technology dictate the locus of code execution – instead issues like availability of computing power, intellectual property and security will dictate this at run time.

This discussion focuses on the way that RBDC creates two ways to satisfy many http requests. The two ways are illustrated in the following two diagrams. These diagrams are similar to those in a earlier discussion.

In the first scenario (DIAGRAM 1) we see a client requesting resource A and evaluating code locally to satisfy its own http request.

DIAGRAM 1
RBDC Diagram 1

In the second scenario (DIAGRAM 2) we see the same client. However in this case, when the client requests resource A, the client does not tell the server about it’s local computing capacity. In this case the relevant code is evaluated on the server.

DIAGRAM 2

The two ways of satisfying the request have differing performances. The relative performance of the two alternatives will be determined by things like the server/client balance of: response time, network bandwidth, and network latency.

A monitor can observe the time to complete each http request and recommend to the client whether to request mobile code or to let the server evaluate the code that generates the resource. This is an adaptive process because during a 24 hour period server availability, network latency and available bandwidth could change radically. Once the monitor has decided on the fastest way to execute a piece of mobile code, it may attempt the evaluation of mobile code in the opposite way once every N requests – in this way keeping its adaptive capability current.
